You'll notice quite a few glitches and bugs, plus the AI being completely unforgiving, even if you set the difficulty on Very Easy. This thrill ride isn't without its faults, however.
There's some new surprises though, like the "Aggressor" bar which gives you more power once it's full, and auto-combos to give you an advantage against your opponents. Once Kahn's destroyed (Good luck, YOU'LL NEED IT!), you get to pick your reward: whether it be your character's ending or a fatality demonstration. You fight your way up the tower, battle an endurance team (like MK1, sometimes with more people), then Motaro, then finally you face Shao Kahn.
The higher the rank, the more people you fight and the harder they are. Once you pick a character in 1-player mode, you pick one of four towers: Novice, Warrior, Master, and Champion. You can choose between 1-on-1 Kombat, 2-on-2, or 8-player tournament. So what does he do? He sends his champions to kill the warriors. The souls of the warriors who Raiden (who, by the way, is a rebel frowned upon by the gods) chose to stand against Kahn's rule. Uh-oh! The Elder gods can only watch as Kahn steals the soul of every human being and merges Earth with the Outworld. So he revives his ten thousand-year-old plan of resurrecting his queen Sindel, but not on Outworld, on Earth. Shao Kahn was a sore loser after suffering defeat in MKII. The game revolves around the story of MK3. Mortal Kombat Trilogy basically takes these four games and merges them into one big game, creating as Jim Ross of the WWE would say: "One good ol' fashioned slobberknocker" of a game.

Not only was it the last game in the series to be designed for an arcade machine, it was also the last one to be ported to the PC until Mortal Kombat 9 Komplete Edition in 2013! The sound and music come straight from the arcade version and sound excellent.Įven though it wasn't as memorable as the 2D Mortal Kombat games, MK4 is still a fun and worthy addition to the franchise.

Graphics-wise, the game can be played in Software Rendering, Direct3D, or even 3dfx Glide if you have one of those cards. This PC version of the game adds some nice new treats, such as Team Battle, Endurance Mode, Tournament Mode, and even a Practice Mode that tells you the characters' special moves and fatalities! Speaking of fatalities, you can adjust the fatality commands to either be keyboard-friendly, or function like they do in the arcade. Defeat him, and the game is won! Once again, in a 2-player VS game, you can enter secret codes on the VS screen to spice up the fight. Once you get to the top, you earn a rematch with Goro from MK1, then you face the evil Elder God Shinnok. Once again, the higher the tower, the more people you fight and the harder it is. You select your character and choose one of five towers. There are fifteen playable characters in the game, plus two hidden characters. When you start the game, you choose between regular 1-on-1 Kombat, or 2-on-2 (which can now be done in single-player mode as well as with 2 players). It's limited though, as you need to perform a special command to pull a weapon out, and you drop the weapon once you're hit. The second biggest new feature of MK4 is the introduction of weapon-based kombat. However, even though players can now sidestep during battle, the game still largely retains the 2D gameplay of its predecessors. MK4's biggest conrtibution is that it's the first major entry in the Mortal Kombat series to be presented in 3D graphics. Raiden must now assemble Liu Kang and the other Earthrealm warriors in order to stop Shinnok and his minions before this war end up destroying the Earth AND the Heavens! He has already conquered Edenia, and is now planning to wage war against the Elder Gods for banishing him. The evil and fallen Elder God Shinnok has escaped from the pits of the hellish Netherrealm, thanks to his loyal servant, the sorceror Quan Chi, and an Edenian traitor known as Tanya. Shao Kahn has been defeated! Earthrealm is saved, and Princess Kitana's homeworld of Edenia has been restored! Now Liu Kang, Raiden, and the other Earthrealm Warriors can finally live happily ever after. You can get full disc images of Mortal Kombat 4 from our ISO Cellar.
